Low-Luminosity AGNs and Unification
نویسندگان
چکیده
More than one third of all nearby galaxies show indications of low-luminosity nuclear activity. These low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) are traditionally classified into a variety of categories depending on their forbidden-line ratios and on the presence or absence of broadline emission. By analogy with Seyfert unification models, it is natural to ask whether the various LLAGN types are different manifestations of the same underlying phenomenon, with observed differences being solely due to orientation and obscuration, or whether there are fundamentally distinct physical processes at work in different categories of LLAGNs. This contribution reviews some recent observations of LLAGNs in the context of AGN unification scenarios.

A Single Intrinsic Luminosity Function for Both Type-I and Type-II Active Galactic Nuclei
The luminous electromagnetic emission from distant active galactic nuclei (AGNs) including quasars is believed to be powered by accretion onto supermassive black holes (SMBHs). In the standard unification model for AGNs a dusty torus covers a significant portion of the viewing angles to the accretion disk and the BH. The system is classified as a type-I AGN if the accretion disk is viewed throu...
متن کاملOn the Unification of Active Galactic Nuclei
The inevitable spread in properties of the toroidal obscuration of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) invalidates the widespread notion that type 1 and 2 AGNs are intrinsically the same objects, drawn randomly from the distribution of torus covering factors. Instead, AGNs are drawn preferentially from the distribution; type 2 are more likely drawn from the distribution higher end, type 1 from its lo...
متن کاملEstimate black hole masses of AGNs using ultraviolet emission line properties
Based on the measured sizes of broad line region of the reverberation-mapping AGN sample, two new empirical relations are introduced to estimate the central black hole masses of radio-loud high-redshift (z > 0.5) AGNs. First, using the archival IUE/HST spectroscopy data at UV band for the reverberation-mapping objects, we obtained two new empirical relations between the BLR size and Mgii /Civ e...
متن کاملBlack hole mass and accretion rate of active galactic nuclei with double-peaked broad emission lines
Using an empirical relation between the broad line region size and optical continuum luminosity, we estimated the black hole mass and accretion rate for 135 AGNs with double-peaked broad emission lines in two samples, one from the SDSS and the other from a survey of radio-loud broad emission line AGNs. With black hole masses in a range from 3×10M⊙ to 5×10 M⊙, these AGNs have the dimensionless a...
متن کاملDust covering factor, silicate emission and star formation in luminous QSOs
We present Spitzer IRS low resolution, mid-IR spectra of a sample of 25 high luminosity QSOs at 2<z<3.5. When combined with archival IRS observations of local, low luminosity type-I active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the sample spans five orders of magnitude in luminosity. We find that the continuum dust thermal emission at λrest = 6.7μm is correlated with the optical luminosity, following the non-...
